POND FILTRATION PRODUCT PAGES:POND FILTER CHART Choosing a pond filtration system depends on three critical factors: 1. the size of your pond 2. what is in your pond 3. your budget Using the chart below we give pond filtration recommendations based on the size of your pond and what is in your pond. There is more info on filtration below the chart, but to generalize, the chart reflects the greater need for filtration, especially biological filtration, in ponds with fish. The budget is up to you. |

DIFFERENT TYPES OF FILTRATION Mechanical Filtration Mechanical Filtration refers to the process of trapping the dirt and debris in a pond. This is done by flowing water through a cartridge that traps the dirt. The cartridge is then periodically cleaned. Cartridges are rated in terms of hole size in the material. Our Ocean Clear and ModulFilter filters list the hole size in terms of microns. The larger the micron size the less will be trapped by the filter. Typically, pond filters have micron sizes from 50 to 100 microns. Keep in mind that the smaller the micron-size the more quickly the filter will clog and need to be cleaned. All ponds should have a mechanical filter. (See above for recommendations on mechanical filters). Biological Filtration A biological filter contains material that assists in the growth of nitrifying bacteria responsible for the nitrifying cycle that converts toxic fish waste to material that is not toxic. Any pond with fish should have a biological filter. While plants do help clarify pond water and nitrifying bacteria does grow all over the pond, this will not be enough for a pond with fish. Fish ponds, in almost all cases, have a greater concentration of fish than is found in nature and need help with the nitrifying cycle. All ponds with fish should definitely have a biological filter. (See above for recommendations on biological filters). Chemical Filtration Chemical filtration is the removal of chemical substances such as pesticides or herbicides. This is usually done with activated carbon. A chemical filter, like a mechanical filter, will trap material. The carbon should be disposed of every year and replaced. Chemical filtration is not nearly as important as mechanical or biological filtration. (See above for recommendations on chemical filters). OTHER CONSIDERATIONS Algae: The filters listed above will not take care of algae (or green water)--they may trap it, but they won't kill it. To rid your pond of algae you will need a UV Sterilizer. Pre-Filters: A pre-filter protects the intake of a submersible pump by trapping debris that can be harmful to the pump. All the Pondmaster Pond-Mag pumps (and Pondmaster Filter/Pump combos) come with a pre-filter. Larger pumps, such as the Dolphin Aqua Sea Series, should be used with a Leaf Basket/Priming Pot to protect the intake of the pump from debris. The Leaf Basket, as well as any other pre-filter, should be cleaned frequently. What else do I need?: The PondMaster systems (i.e. Pondmaster 1250 Filter and 250gph Pump) come with everything included and can be assembled in a matter of minutes. They are submerged into the pond. The Ocean Clear. Inland Seas and Pondmaster Pressurized Pond filters are typically used as external filters (not submersed in the water) and do not come with a pump. You can also buy a Pondmaster pump from PondAndFountain.com to run the Pondmaster Pressurized, Ocean Clear and Inland Seas filters. For help in choosing a pump, please visit our Pump Overview page. Cleaning: Mechanical filters must be cleaned. How often is difficult to say, but at least once a month (during the warm months) is a minimum requirement. If you don't clean your filter you have accomplished nothing--there is no reason to have a filter. Replacing the Mechanical Filter Pads: Once a year. Koi and Goldfish: If you don't want to spend the necessary funds for the recommended filtration in the POND FILTER CHART, keep in mind that Goldfish are hearty creatures that can survive in murkier waters than koi and you can get by with less filtration. |
